Student visa documents: UK paperwork to prepare

Applying for a student visa abroad often means gathering more than an offer letter. Depending on the country, course and visa category, you may need UK documents proving your identity, education history, finances, health status, family relationship or criminal record.

These documents may be valid in the UK, but the overseas visa authority may still require them to be certified, legalised, translated or attested before they are accepted.

Start with the visa checklist

Before preparing any documents, check the official student visa checklist for your destination country.

The checklist should confirm which documents are needed, whether originals or certified copies are accepted, how recent each document must be and whether legalisation or translation is required.

Requirements can vary between countries, universities and visa categories, so do not rely only on general advice.

Education documents

Most student visa applications require proof of previous education.

This may include GCSE or A-level certificates, degree certificates, diplomas, academic transcripts, enrolment letters or confirmation of award letters.

If a document is a copy, PDF or digitally issued record, it may need solicitor or notary certification before it can be legalised for overseas use.

University offer letters

Your overseas university or college may issue an offer letter, acceptance letter or enrolment confirmation to support the visa application.

In most cases, this comes from the receiving institution rather than the UK. However, if you need to submit UK academic references, previous enrolment letters or school confirmations, those documents may need certification or legalisation.

Check whether the visa authority needs documents sent directly from the institution or prepared separately.

Financial evidence

Student visa applications often require proof that you can support yourself during your studies.

This may include UK bank statements, sponsor letters, scholarship letters, payslips, tax documents or proof of income from parents or guardians.

Because many financial documents are issued digitally, a printed PDF may need solicitor or notary certification before it can be legalised. Some authorities also require financial documents to be recent.

Birth certificates and parental documents

Younger students may need documents proving their relationship to a parent or guardian.

This can include a birth certificate, adoption certificate, parental consent letter, custody document or statutory declaration.

Civil certificates should usually be originals or official certified copies. Consent letters and declarations often need solicitor or notary certification before legalisation.

Police checks

Some student visa applications require a criminal record check, especially for longer courses, healthcare placements, teaching placements or countries with stricter immigration rules.

Depending on the requirement, you may need an ACRO Police Certificate, DBS certificate, Disclosure Scotland certificate or AccessNI certificate.

The correct route depends on the document type. Some certificates must be submitted as originals, while others need certification before legalisation.

Medical and vaccination documents

Health documentation may also be requested for student visas.

This can include vaccination records, medical reports, lab results, mental health assessments or fit-to-study letters.

The document may need a verifiable medical signature. If the signature cannot be checked directly, solicitor or notary certification may be needed before legalisation.

Translation and embassy attestation

If the destination country does not accept English documents, certified or sworn translation may be required.

For countries outside the Hague Apostille Convention, UK legalisation may not be the final step. Embassy or consular attestation may also be needed before the visa authority accepts the document.

These extra stages can affect your application timeline, so they should be checked early.

Prepare before your visa appointment

Student visa deadlines can be strict. A missing certification, outdated bank statement, incorrect translation or wrong document format can delay the application.

Before submitting, check that every document matches the visa checklist, names are consistent, dates are valid and the correct legalisation route has been followed.

If you are applying for a student visa abroad, 12 Apostille can review your UK document list, confirm the correct route and manage certification, legalisation, translation or attestation where required.
